The proper approach for women to use the restroom while seated has been described by doctors, who also explained why it is harmful for both men and women to urinate in the shower. It is not only a bad habit, but also a risky one.

Top 10 Household Items You Should Never Keep in the Bathroom

1. Accustoming Your Bladder to the Flow of Water

The topic was discussed by urogynecologist Dr. Teresa Irwin on TikTok. She said that while doing so can help you empty your bladder properly when standing up, it also teaches your brain to release urine whenever you hear water flowing.

You should not do it frequently because, as a result of getting accustomed to hearing the sound of water in the shower, your bladder will want to urinate whenever you hear it, she said.

In other words, your bladder will be salivating because it has to urinate anytime you wash your hands or do the dishes.

2. Consequences of Relieving Oneself in the Shower

Dr. Alicia Jeffrey-Thomas, a pelvic floor therapist with a practice in Boston, concurred with Dr. Irwin and discussed the potentially harmful consequences of urinating while in the presence of a flowing stream of water.

In 2021, she warned her 468,000 TikTok subscribers that peeing while the water was running would cause your brain to associate the sound of flowing water with the need to urinate.

Those who were born with female anatomy were meant to urinate sitting down, therefore having a weak pelvic floor might potentially cause some leak difficulties.

3. Guidelines to Avoid This Habit

Dr. Jeffrey-Thomas advised that you will have to attempt urinating before turning on the shower’s water and that you should try to ignore any urges you may have while you are in there.

The physician cited Ivan Pavlov, a scientist, who is credited with discovering classical conditioning through his well-known experiment with dogs. Dr. Jeffrey-Thomas noted that when the man rings the bell every time he puts food out for the dogs, ultimately the dog comes to identify the bell with food and begins to drool even when there is not any.

The doctor’s instructions are to try to use the restroom no more than four times during the day, with a minimum of two times in the “How to Train Your Bladder” television series. Dr. Jeffrey-Thomas said that you should not typically be waking up at night.

The objective, she continued, is to ride the wave so that we are not caving in at that high intensity and also not leaking. If you frequently give in to the impulse to use the restroom immediately, your brain will get conditioned to do so more frequently.

4. Appropriate Urination Technique for Women

According to professor Ajay Rane of the podcast Mamamia, there is a proper manner for women to urinate. Given the design of the western bathroom, the proper position on the toilet is to sit with your feet flat on the floor. This encourages the relaxing of your pelvic and thigh muscles.

At an assembly of the American Urogynecology Society in 2004, Prof. Rane discussed “The Perfect Pee”. You bend forward and have your elbows resting on your knees as if you were reading a newspaper on the floor. This technique is how to empty your bladder completely.

Were you familiar with this information? Are you guilty of this practice as well?
