Exercise is not only about going to the gym. A workout plan is indeed necessary for your body, but believe it or not, exercise is also important for boosting the function of your brain. Brain health supplements can only contribute to your brain’s health to a certain extent.

Renowned neuroscientist Fred Gage believes a workout plan for the brain is essential to the brain’s health. According to the neuroscientist, the definition of brain exercises includes engaging in cognitive activities like puzzles, memory games, and learning new skills.

But according to neuroscientists, the definition of brain exercises also includes those that improve blood flow to the brain. So, some specific physical exercises can help improve the blood supply to your brain. When you add these exercises to your exercise plan, you are doing your body and brain a favor.

Here are the exercises that neuroscientists, including Fred Gage, say work better than brain health supplements.

1. Cardiovascular Exercises

Cardiovascular exercises can range from light to high intensity. If you’re developing a beginner workout plan, starting with walking and then increasing the intensity is best. Some moderate to high-intensity cardiovascular exercises are:

  • Jogging
  • Swimming
  • Elliptical
  • Rowing
  • Biking

If you are planning an exercise routine for the first time, try doing 10-15 minutes of these exercises first. You can then steadily increase it to 30 minutes 2 days a week. You can even do 2 cardiovascular activities in a day once you build the stamina.

2. Resistance Training

Resistance training works wonders for your muscles and even your brain. Add light at-home exercises like the Leslie walk to your beginner workout plan. Then consider gradually adding weightlifting exercises to your exercise plan.

Train your body to do at least 20-30 minutes of resistance training and one cardiovascular exercise 2 days a week.

3. Yoga

Yoga relaxes your body as well as your brain. When you’re planning exercise, you can start by adding a little yoga every day in the morning before you start your day.

Although it is tough for those who love to sleep in a little longer, even on weekdays, once you see the difference it makes, you won’t leave it for the world.

4. Rest Days

Even though exercise is essential for your body and brain, so is rest. Although you don’t want to skip yoga, you can skip the moderate to high-intensity workouts for 1-2 days a week. During the off days, add deep-breathing exercises to your yoga routine.

Final Words

Cognitive exercises like learning a new skill or playing memory games are useful for brain health. However, even physical exercises can contribute to the brain’s functionality. Cardiovascular exercises, resistance training, and yoga are proven beneficial for brain health.

In the beginning, it may seem like an uphill task; however, once you get used to it, you will notice how easy it is. Eventually, you will begin to feel better day by day.
