Most of us experience insomnia when we are stressed or excited about a big day. The underlying reason is the stress and anxiety essentially triggered by our brain’s fight-or-flight response. This is what keeps us tossing and turning in bed.

However, if you have an important meeting or event the next day, you should get some rest so you can give your best performance.

1. What is Chronic Insomnia?

Besides occasional insomnia, many people also experience chronic insomnia. For this issue, they need to take medications. Even a partner who snores can cause people to stay awake at night, making them unproductive the next day.

Such people might get addicted to insomnia medication, which disrupts their sleep routine and impacts their brain’s ability to put the body to sleep. So, if you have a snoring partner and don’t want to go for insomnia treatment, you might want to experiment with multiple snoring solutions. But if you take insomnia medication and still cannot sleep without any apparent reason, here are some things that you shouldn’t do.

2. Scrolling Through Your Phone

If you’re experiencing sleeplessness, scrolling through your phone to pass the time wouldn’t help. In fact, it is worse than tossing and turning in bed because the light from the phone and your brain’s activity as you read or watch won’t let you sleep.

However, the phone can be pretty helpful in putting you to sleep too. If you’re experiencing stress and anxiety, some white noise on your phone can help you calm down and sleep.

3. Going to the Bathroom

When you cannot sleep, you might get up to drink water and go to the bathroom every once in a while. However, if you keep going into a lighted-up bathroom relieving yourself, your brain might never be able to relax. As a result, you will stay awake for the rest of the night.

If you want to sleep, the best insomnia treatment is to draw the curtains and turn off all the lights. When this happens, you shut down the visual input to the brain. If you can manage silence, then you are cutting off the sounds. When the brain has nothing much to process, it can help you drift off to sleep.

4. Getting Up from Bed

If you’re sleeping and often get up in the middle of the night, ensure you don’t get out of bed. If you do, you are pressing your heart. When you sleep, your heart rate is slow, and when you suddenly get up from bed, your heart’s blood flow increases. With increased heart blood flow, you can lose your sleep.

So, if you finally put yourself to sleep, don’t get up, even if you wake up in the middle of the night. To reduce your urge to urinate, reduce your intake of fluids after 6 p.m.

If you’re sleeping with a partner who has tested snoring solutions but to no avail, try avoiding these three things to sleep soundly!
