On a sunny weekend, you are going to the beach with your family. It’s a long drive to the beach. You are listening to “Dream Brother” by Jeff Buckley with your face tucked out of the car window and your parents are schooling you on how to behave at the beach. Nostalgic, isn’t it?
The Do’s & Don’ts
- Keep your gaze lower
- Don’t go far away without informing
- Don’t eat sand
- Keep your mouth closed while dodging the waves
1. What Happens Inside Our Body When We Drink Sea Water?
It is very hazardous to consume seawater not only because of the harbor germs, but also because seawater is loaded with salt. Salt is rich in sodium, which if consumed in big quantities can be very dangerous for our health.
No doubt, this electrolyte regulates the volume of the blood, but in order to digest such salt, you need lots and lots of water.

Did you ever notice why you get thirsty after eating a bag of crisps? It’s because your brain is signaling you to drink water so that your kidney filters out the excess salt. Our body is designed to meet the needs of the situation.
But of course, your kidneys can not flush out the salt from seawater, it’s just too much! Dr. Christann Coffey of the University of California San Diego reveals that the ratio of your blood salinity to the seawater salinity is just 9 grams per liter to 35 grams per liter, making it four times more salty.
Anyone who consumes saltwater is likely to suffer from high salt content in blood, which has a major effect on our brain. It can even cause brain dysfunctioning.
2. Oh No! I Drank Sea Water, What To Do Now?
It is necessary to have a perfect balance of salt and water inside your blood cells in order to let the kidneys filter out the excess salt.
Your cells fight hard to maintain the balance by adding more water into the bloodstream as soon as salt water enters your blood vessels. As a result, your kidney passes out this salt water in the form of urine which causes dehydration.
Symptoms of dehydration may include increase in thirst, dryness in mouth, infrequent urination, feeling lethargic, and nauseous. Gulp on some fresh water to avoid any such circumstances.

Make sure the water is fresh and not salty, otherwise it could backfire resulting in severe vomiting and can leave you hallucinating. It can be a great threat to life too. It’s better to not drink water at all, than to chug on some seawater.
