We’re all very fond of our morning coffee, aren’t we? Nothing like a good cup of joe first thing in the morning to start our day with, and modern-day coffee makers have made it very easy to get a good cup of coffee in the morning in a matter of minutes, and we can thank technology for that.
However, when was the last time you cleaned your coffee maker? If you can’t remember the answer to that, you’re not alone. Though an infamous news channel, going by the name of CBS, did thorough research to raise awareness on the number of bacteria that can accumulate on your coffee machine, the results of this study are astonishingly terrifying. Keep reading more to find out about this study!
Background of Research
Before we list the numerous bacteria that are probably in your coffee right now, transferred from your coffee machine, let’s go through this research that took place in Chicago. CBS is well aware that we Americans like to clean our kitchen counters and everything in our house squeaky clean, but they noticed that most coffee makers were only just cleaned on the outside. So, as you can already guess, they looked deep into this matter, devising a study that led to us creating this article.
Ten families in Chicago were chosen for this study by CBS news, with samples taken from their uncleaned coffee makers. These samples were then taken into a lab, tested for various anaerobic bacteria, and filed into a report. Keep in mind that samples were taken from a lot of different points, which include everywhere from the surface to the coffee tray.

The Results
After this study was conducted and the results were finalized, the terrifying list of bacteria on these coffee makers was a key point on one of the various CBS shows. As it turns out, there were signs of a long list of pathogens on these coffee makers, the most dangerous of which was E. Coli and staphylococci. You certainly don’t want those in your breakfast!
However, a few of the test cases in this study turned out to be clean of these pathogens, which was complemented by the fact that the owners cleaned out the coffee machine at least once in a while.
Bottom Line
Coffee machine cleaning has never been more important, and this study by CBS has opened our eyes even more. This is why we’ve made it our life’s mission to educate the public about this impending problem and to make sure that the next time you’re cleaning your kitchen, you don’t forget to clean your coffee maker too.
