If you drink a glass of wine every night as part of your routine, perhaps it is time to reconsider your night beverage. According to a growing body of data, drinking alcohol at any level can be detrimental to your health and raise your risk of coronary heart disease, cancer, and other conditions.

While the risks of binge drinking are widely established, certain studies have recently drawn attention to the risks of even alcohol in moderation use.

1. Consuming Alcohol in Moderation Might Hurt Your Health

Many scientists are raising awareness about the possible risks of our alcohol intake as they conduct further research into how it affects our health. In fact, a recent study found that, annually, almost 140,000 fatalities are related to heavy alcohol consumption.

60% of the deaths were brought on by chronic illnesses including cancer, cardiovascular disease, liver problems, and other ailments, while some were brought on by alcohol-related automobile accidents and other acute occurrences.

According to experts, alcohol may cause DNA damage and oxidative stress, which stops our cells from mending, which can lead to these significant health disorders. One in eight fatalities among individuals aged 20 to 64, according to the study’s authors, are related to binge drinking.

2. Here Is How Drinking Compares to Smoking

In 2019 research, the relative cancer risks of consuming one bottle of wine each week vs smoking cigarettes were evaluated. According to the study’s authors, non-smokers who consume one bottle of wine every week have a higher chance of developing cancer. 

In other words, smoking five cigarettes a week for males and ten cigarettes for women is equivalent to drinking one bottle of wine a week.

Women should consume no more than one serving of alcohol daily, while men should consume no more than two servings. This is advised by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

3. The Purported Health Advantages of Wine Are Being Questioned

Moderate wine consumption has a history of being associated with heart health. Scientists now claim that there is only a connection between wine consumption and heart health, not a cause-and-effect relationship. 

Moderate red wine drinkers are just more likely to practice other heart-healthy behaviors like exercise and a heart-healthy diet.

Alcohol by itself does not seem to offer any extra protection, and it probably works against the advantages of these other healthy behaviors. This is due to the fact that alcohol use, even in moderation, can raise blood pressure and induce irregular heartbeat, thrombosis, and stroke.

4. Cutting Back on Your Intake Has Major Advantages

The growing body of data tends to indicate that, in terms of health, one drink per week is the ideal amount. Cutting back might also have progressive advantages if the idea of quitting drinking altogether seems too intimidating.

To lower your total alcohol consumption, there are numerous easy actions you may take. These include establishing drinking targets, charting your vulnerabilities, limiting alcohol in the house, picking alcohol-free wine, and consuming carefully.

It might be a key first step in your recovery to seek professional assistance and even get alcohol addiction treatment if you think you may have an alcohol use problem.
