Whether you use social media to communicate with individuals for your job or to stay in touch with loved ones, it has become an integral part of many people’s daily lives.

It is also easy to get pulled in and lose hours scrolling through despair, keeping a watchful eye on a past love, or obsessively buying items, even if it appears to be a universal method for most of us to interact and pass the time. Simply put, it is addictive.

Read on for five indicators that, in the opinion of experts, indicate that your use of social media is becoming problematic if you are worried about your own consumption.

1. Your Sense of Self-Worth Is Declining

Social media frequently posts heavily manipulated and filtered pictures of both strangers and acquaintances. Although your ex-college roommate’s flawless skin may be merely an artful deception, it might be difficult to avoid comparing it to your own.

Even though people only share the best parts of their lives on social media, watching someone’s glitzy European trip or their beautiful Christmas table decoration may still make you feel inferior.

If what you encounter on social media agitates you, it might be detrimental to your well-being. When you begin to feel as though your self-esteem is being threatened, constantly remind yourself that what you see online is not the everyday world.

2. You Suffer from Sleep Troubles

The majority of us browse through our Facebook or Instagram accounts before bed, but if this habit starts to interfere with our sleep routine, it may turn into an issue. Social media usage that is hazardous to your health is indicated by difficulty falling asleep.

These signs, such as finding it difficult to put your phone away before bed or getting up during the course of the night to look at it, show that you have developed unhealthy behavior.

Experts advise putting your phone aside at least half an hour before you decide to sleep to enhance your sleep quality. Bright blue light from electronic gadgets tricks your brain into postponing sleep, keeping you awake longer than you would want.

3. Scrolling Just Won’t Stop

The inability to stop scrolling on media platforms, despite all attempts to divert your attention from it, is one of the most obvious symptoms that your usage of the platform is becoming problematic.

Social media is a distant contender to texting as the activity we engage in most on our phones. The majority of us have a couple to three accounts on social media that we often monitor.

Your usage of social media is beginning to change if you never look up and are constantly checking your accounts, even for a little while.

4. You Spend More Time Behind the Screen than Outdoors

If you find yourself on your smartphone or computer more often than you communicate with real people, it may be time to limit your usage of social media.

If you are not keeping up with acquaintances in person as frequently as you used to and instead you are merely browsing their social media posts, you may be missing out on an essential aspect of healthy sociability. If your online communication is replacing in-person interactions, it may be time to assess whether it is healthy or unhealthy.

Being an introvert is one thing, but if you are putting your gadgets above human interaction, it might be a good idea to step back and reassess your approach to social media.

5. Your Real Life Personal Connections Are Deteriorating

Your connections with your love partner, friends, or relatives are failing, which is a huge warning sign that you have become too dependent on social media and have neglected your real life.

The drawbacks of social platforms may hurt relationships. If your nearest and dearest accused you of spending more time on the internet than with them, your relationships with them might suffer.

It does not matter if your friend uploaded a photo of their stylish new clothing or if one of your followers is on a lavish trip. A person’s actual life will always be more significant and real than social media.

Bottom Line

Everyone agrees that social media apps have grown to be an important part of people’s lives, but if the right balance is not preserved, negative outcomes might occur.

Decide intelligently between social media and real life in terms of which one you would like to give importance and priority to.
