Since the 3rd millennium, medicines have been used for the diagnosis of illness and for curing diseases of all kinds.

However, that’s where you should be even more careful, as medicines not only provide you relief but also can be the source of some serious complications in many cases.

One of the major causes of these complications includes the mixing of drugs, supplements, and alcohol.

The veracity of these incidents has quite increased and about 1.5 million people have been harmed annually because of medication errors.

The chemistry of medicine is quite complex and causes some serious side effects when misused hence it is better to consult the right people. Let’s take a look at some of the drastic mixing of medicines and what they do to our bodies.

1. Some Common Medication Errors

One of the common combinations that are used by people is painkillers and supplements. Both of them do not belong under the same category and hence should not be taken together.

Many people believe in herbal medication by considering it all natural but when combined with other medications, they can cause some severe problems.

Many pain and anti-anxiety medicines have extreme side effects with drugs hence avoid taking drugs and alcohol side by side.

You might be wondering what exactly alcohol does with medicines. Well, alcohol tends to reduce the effectiveness of medicines and produces a toxic effect on the body instead.

Depression is a widespread disorder and seems to be quite common among people nowadays. However, what they don’t know is that when antidepressants are taken side by side with painkillers they can cause vomiting, stomach pain, nausea, and other problems.

2. It’s Not Always Your Fault

It is quite necessary to ask your doctor about the details of your medications including side effects of medicine, amount of dose, time of dose, and what to avoid while you’re on medication.

However, sometimes mistakes like these happen because of the negligence of pharmacies or doctors. After all, it’s your doctor’s job to take account of all the medications that you intake and prescribe the medicine accordingly.

Using multiple pharmacies can also prove to be a problem, as new pharmacies do not have your medical history or the list of medications you are on.

Hence if you insist on visiting different pharmacies, make sure to deliver a list of all the medications you’re on.

3. Looking Out for Yourself

There are many ways you can find some basic knowledge about medicines, for example via your doctor or articles on the internet.

However, using tools like Drug Interaction Checker, makes it way easier to gather information regarding the harmful and unsafe mixture of medicines that are commonly found in households.

There are also other apps available in case you want to urgently check any medication information.

Bottom Line

It is always better to look out for yourself and understand what is good and bad for your body.

Medicines are intended for making our lives easier but without gathering sufficient information, we should avoid making decisions on our own that might cause severe effects on our health.
