Poultry meat has become the most inexpensive and most significant source of protein in our diet. So whether we eat roasted breasts, chicken sausages, chicken Manchurian, or want to make our zinger at home, chicken is essential.

Although chicken is a wallet-friendly protein source, that doesn’t mean you start wasting the leftovers. If you haven’t eaten your roasted chicken drumsticks, you better preserve them in your refrigerator.

Almost every home chef has asked the same question repeatedly” How long is cooked chicken good in the fridge?” Well, that’s a tricky question, and you must know the answer. Eating food contaminated with microbes can lead to vomiting and severe diarrhea.

How Long is Chicken Good in the Fridge?

There is a discussion among the experts about the freshness of chicken in the fridge. The electric appliance can safeguard the nutritional value of chicken for a maximum of 4 days.

Therefore, if you have placed your cooked chicken leftovers in the fridge on Monday, don’t make the mistake of eating them on Friday.

Instead, you better dispose of them so that any of your family members won’t take a bite of them after opening the refrigerator’s door.

However, some experts disagree with this theory and believe in eating the cooked chicken even after 3-4 months of preservation.

How long does cooked chicken last in the fridge depends on some factors of which people are usually unaware! That is why they must discard the scrumptious but foul-smelling chicken pieces from their refrigerator.

Reasons for Cooked Chicken Spoilage in Fridge

Microbes are the hidden enemies of human health and nutrition. Food pathogens are usually toxin-producing microbes that immediately start to grow on the uncovered and unpreserved food items.

1. Refrigerator is not Functioning Properly

You must think that you have stored your leftovers in the fridge, but why does the chicken get spoiled? Also, have you noticed whether your refrigerator is cooling efficiently or not?

Place a thermometer in your refrigerator and notice the temperature after equal intervals. Check if it is below 4 degrees or not, as some molds can grow at this range of temperature and secrete aflatoxins in food that are poisonous to human health.

2.  Placing Cooked Chicken with Raw Meat

Raw meat is not washed correctly; that’s why it contains bacteria and fungi. When you place cooked chicken with raw meat, the pathogens transfer from raw meat to cooked chicken and start spoiling it.

3. Ignoring the Time Limit

How long does chicken last in the refrigerator depends on the time you have stored it in your refrigerator! Place the cooked chicken in the fridge within two hours; otherwise, pathogens will take it as their food.

All in a Nutshell

If you find any foul-smelling, change in texture, change in taste, or slimy appearance, discard the chicken as it is not worth eating now.

You now have a clear idea about how long does cooked chicken last in refrigerator, therefore, you must save others from eating contaminated items and wasting poultry meat.
