20. Michigan MI

Although the outbound rate is not very scary, many of the young adults are leaving the State and seeking better job opportunities elsewhere. This is because the state has a somewhat slow development economy and does not have enough high-paying jobs, making the livability somewhat mediocre.

19. California CA

While the state and its cities are very attractive to visitors, original citizens are finding it hard to stay! The cost of living is relatively high compared to its neighboring states like Arizona. However, the outbound immigration is not a big problem for California since it still manages to attract enough international immigrants to compensate for the loss.

18. Vermont VT

Vermont is the state with the highest age average of 42.9 years. Although many retirees and old people are targeting Vermont, youngsters are fleeing it for better jobs and better lifestyles elsewhere.

17. Oklahoma OK

The high rate of outbound immigration from Oklahoma is merely due to people finding better job opportunities somewhere else. The number of people leaving is slightly higher than those entering, however.

16. Iowa IA

Iowa is one of those slowly but surely developing American states and counties. Progress is a plus in a state, but some people just don’t have the patience to withstand it when it’s too slow!

15. Massachusetts MA

Massachusetts is actually not that terrible in terms of resources and jobs, its problem resides in housing. The supply is slightly lower than the demand, which inflates housing prices to unaffordable levels. This is enough to push people to move to other more affordable states.

14. North Dakota ND

North Dakota has hit some bumps on its road to adequate development. It’s highly unindustrialized and most citizens find it too dormant and boring to live in.

13. Arkansas AR

Arkansas is ranked 45th on livability among 52 states in the US. It has high crime rates, almost no attractive or entertaining activities, and unfortunately, not enough job opportunities to satisfy its citizens.

12. Rhode Island RI

In spite of being the smallest state in the US, Rhode Island is one of the most crowded States in the country with over 1 million citizens, making the population density in the state of 1020.5 people per square mile. This is not a place where people would want to live and raise their children, and that’s why they’re leaving.

11. Kansas KS

With a very high tax rate and almost no natural diversity, Kansas is not the most attractive American state if you’re seeking to live the American dream.

10. Mississippi MS

Almost everyone in Mississippi is living with minimum wage and the unemployment rates have reached 5.7% in December 2020, which is two percent higher than the rate in the entire country. It has a poverty rate of 19.6% and one of the worst healthcare systems. Teenage pregnancy rates are skyrocketing and life expectancy is decreasing, reaching 74.6 years today. With all of these conditions, who wouldn’t want to move out?

9. Ohio OH

In Ohio, unemployment rate is at 4.2% and the wages are not very tempting. Moreover, the instability of the weather is one of the main reasons why people are leaving this state.

8. Alaska AK

This may not come as a surprise to many seeing that Alaska is already practically empty. It has the population density of less than 1.5 people per square mile. The weather there is tough, unemployment and violent crimes rates are high, and public schools are not the best in the country.

On top of that, living there is very expensive seeing that groceries and utilities must be exported from other states, making the decrease in density of population very justifiable.

7. Connecticut CT

While Connecticut is not that bad in terms of the amount of riches and resources, it’s terrible when it comes to the division of wealth in the state. The disproportionality of living conditions across the state make it very hard for the poor regions to stay populated.

6. Illinois IL

By having the highest effective median total tax rate in the country (15%), terrible infrastructure and not enough entertainment to satisfy citizens, Illinois has been losing to more promising states like Florida and N.S. Carolina.

5. Hawaii HI

Hawaii is mainly known for being a vacation destination. Even those who intend to move and live there, end up going back to their home States after an average of 2 years. That’s because living in Hawaii is the most expensive in the entire country. Moreover, many find it hard to adapt with the cultural change and just head back home. It’s own citizens are leaving it looking for better job opportunities in other states.

4. Louisiana LA

The economy in Louisiana has always been based on gas and oil seeing the decline in those fields around the world, citizens are finding it hard to stay there and are moving to states with better and more diverse opportunities.

3. West Virginia WV

Similar to Louisiana, West Virginia has always been relying on coal mining for its economy. With the decline in demand for this industry, poverty rates are skyrocketing reaching 16% last year. Those who can afford to move to other states are doing so!

2. New York NY

The glamorous and captivating New York is losing to warmer states and those with better job opportunities. The tax rates are very high, there are almost no job opportunities in the upstate, living there is very expensive, and on top of that, it’s extremely lonely and boring to live in New York during this COVID-19 pandemic. People are finding it more convenient to completely move to other states than to stay there, and we can understand why.

1. New Jersey NJ

New Jersey is the least attractive state in the entire country for many reasons. the main one being that it’s extremely crowded, it has one of the highest population densities around the world and not only in the US, and that is 1,218 people per mile square.

Living there is very expensive and tax rates are extremely high. In addition to that, the weather is very high during the winter. This explains why 70% of the outbound immigrating citizens Target warmer and less crowded States like Florida and North and South Carolina!
