Ever seen pictures of swollen ankles due to congestive heart failure? Well, if that sounds unfamiliar, you should know that ankle swellings and swelling on top of your foot can indicate serious health problems.

So, the next time you get swollen ankles pictures from any of your friends or family members, ask them to consult a doctor.

In addition, here are some reasons for the top of foot swellings.

1. Edema

This happens when your body retains too much water. Along with your hands and cheeks, your feet may also become swollen.

If you stay still for a prolonged time or after a long trip, you might experience it. Some women also experience it around the time of their monthly cycle.

Even while it typically fades away by itself, it can occasionally be a symptom of a health issue such as heart failure, low protein levels, or renal or liver problems.

2. Injury

A swollen foot may indicate a broken ankle or sprain if you stumble or take an incorrect step, which occurs when the flexible, tough tissue connecting the bones around the ankle breaks.

Your ankle and foot may swell when blood flows to the spot to aid healing. If it aches a lot, prevents you from bearing weight, or doesn’t seem right, see a doctor.

3. Pregnancy

As a result of a woman’s body retaining extra water when pregnant, feet may swell naturally during pregnancy.

However, it can be worse after a long day of standing. It can be uncomfortable, but it usually doesn’t indicate a concern for either the mother or the baby.

4. Preeclampsia

While many pregnant women have swelling in their feet, if the edema is accompanied by other symptoms like headache, nausea, difficulty breathing, or stomach pain, it may indicate this illness.

Preeclampsia is a condition that develops at around pregnancy of 20 weeks and may be linked with high blood pressure.

If you don’t get treatment, it could seriously harm your kidneys or liver. When you experience such systems, you should visit your doctor.

5. Lymphedema

This occurs if the lymph nodes, tiny glands, and a part of the body’s immune system are harmed or removed, as frequently happens during cancer therapy.

You may experience swelling in the legs, arms, and feet as a result of your body removing less fluid from the body.

Other anomalies in your lymphatic system or damages to lymphatic vessels may also cause it.

Compression using pneumatics is one remedy for this. Air is periodically pushed into a sleeve that you wear over the injured areas to apply pressure and aid in fluid drainage.

Compression stockings or sleeves, massages, and exercises may also be beneficial.

6. Heart Failure

Your feet may be swollen since the heart can not pump your blood effectively.

Blood that isn’t flowing correctly in one direction might pool in the legs and feet, resulting in edema.

With heart failure, lying flat can be uncomfortable. Your heart may beat faster or with an odd rhythm, and you can find breathing difficult.

If you observe these symptoms, get immediate medical attention.
