While maintaining good brain health should be a priority at any age, as we grow older, the likelihood of developing brain disorders increases, making it even more important.

Numerous techniques have been demonstrated to help maintain cognitive youth, but if all you do is play crossword games or go for regular walks, you may want to think about taking a supplement as well.

Two prebiotic supplements can assist in boosting brain function in as little as 12 weeks, according to recent research. Find more as you scroll down!

1. Studies Conducted on Fiber Supplements

The study about brain and memory supplements was conducted by scholars at the School of Life Course & Population Sciences and was released in Nature Communications.

As stated in a press statement, investigators put the effects of two prebiotic supplements under scrutiny after assessing people over 60’s brain function and muscle strength. The prebiotics in question are insulin and fructooligosaccharide (FOS). As opposed to probiotics, prebiotics support the growth of the healthy gut microbiome in your digestive tract, as per the Mayo Clinic.

FOS is a form of carbs present in many different plants, fruits, and veggies. This includes bananas, garlic, asparagus, among others. As for insulin, it constitutes a dietary fiber that is naturally produced and found in plants.

2. The Impact of Supplements on Brain and Muscle Function

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the impact of these two brain-boost supplements on the gut microbiome, which has been linked in previous research to aging-related changes in cognition and muscular physiological processes.

36 sets of twins were given a dietary supplement or a placebo each day for 12 weeks in order to better understand this association. By the time the research came to a close, the group that took the fiber supplements outperformed the placebo group on cognitive memory tests. Additionally, when conducting a cognitive assessment, those who took the supplements made fewer mistakes.

3. Bright Results for Elderly People in the Future

The research offered more proof that brain health and gut health are connected. Researchers found that after 12 weeks, individuals’ gut microbiome diversity significantly changed as a result of the fiber supplements, especially with regard to the number of beneficial organisms.

This has a great deal of potential to cut down the probability of developing brain disorders in our aging population. Discovering the workings of the link between brain and gut health may provide fresh perspectives on how to live longer and in better health.

In these tight financial times, a large number of individuals might profit from these inexpensive, over-the-counter plant fibers. They are appropriate and safe, per the Mayo Clinic.

4. Effect of Fiber Supplements on Muscle Strength

Despite the supplements’ capability of brain boost, they did not, however, have any influence on muscle strength throughout the course of the 12 weeks, despite the fact that they had favorable benefits on cognition.

Participants in the trial performed strength training and consumed a different protein supplementation designed to enhance muscular function. Patients participated in online surveys and cognitive memory tests while being videotaped and observed throughout the trial.

Because it does not need older folks to travel or go to a hospital, the study researchers noted this as a possible benefit for further investigation. There were additionally a few other restrictions, such as the fact that the subjects were primarily female and that the investigators were unable to measure muscle mass because of the remote location.

The authors of the study acknowledged that more extensive research initiatives must focus on electronic literacy and technological accessibility.
