Plastic water bottles seem to go nowhere anytime soon. They are broadly used and purchased around the globe.
It takes no time to refill a plastic container after using it, but have you ever taken some time to think of whether these bottles are refillable in essence? I don’t think so! Hydration is pivotal, but consuming water from a refilled plastic bottle is absolutely not healthy.
1. What are they made of?
Reusing plastic water bottles is nothing but a bad habit that has spread among people. In fact, a refillable water bottle should either be made of glass or noncorrosive steel.

The plastic bottles we buy from the supermarkets are not to be used again because of a chemical they contain entitled Bisphenol A (BPA). The latter is a dangerous substance that has a bad impact on people’s health, namely their hormones.
According to Dr. Marilyn Glenville, the chemical substances found in plastic water bottles can jeopardize ovulation and increase the danger of suffering from PCOS, endometriosis, breast cancer, and other serious diseases.
As for the clinical professor of microbiology and pathology Philip Tierno, he claimed that the use of plastic water bottles cannot exceed 24 hours. That is to say refilling them can only be done during the day you buy it.
2. Full of Bacteria and Eco-Unfriendly
Another reason behind not having to refill a plastic water bottle is the number of bacteria it contains.
Studies were conducted on bottles that were used by sportsmen for a week, and the results were horrific.
The containers had a number of bacteria and pathogens that exceeds that on an average toilet seat. Disgusting! These germs could actually cause illness to the bottles’ owners.
As stated in a May 2019 paper from the Center for International Environmental Law, the production of plastic necessitates the use of fossil fuels and generates greenhouse gasses, both of which pose a harm to the environment.
In addition, chemicals may contaminate groundwater or the land. Burning plastic garbage may cause airborne hazardous chemical releases. When plastic is dumped into the water, it may damage marine life and ecosystems.
3. Solution and Alternatives
It is essential to drink water and stay hydrated. Because of this, throwaway bottles should be discarded immediately after use.
What is best is to purchase a refillable one, namely BPA-free water bottles or bottles made of glass. You can also try tap water instead of constantly buying water. Last but not least, if you must purchase plastic containers, be careful to recycle them.
A crucial function is playing a positive part in protecting both your health and the environment. Reusing plastic water bottles negatively impacts both humans and our planet.
If you want to help our species and the world survive, start by yourself and change your bad habits. Go for a better alternative of plastic while paying heed to other parameters such as the temperature where the bottles were stored for instance.
