Every year, dentists treat several patients who have broken their teeth due to munching on bizarre items. From keys of your muscle car to paper clips, many everyday items can damage your mouth and teeth.

Therefore, dentists and experts advise you to stay away from clenching such objects in your teeth and mouth.

Similarly, a majority of people are habitual of biting on bottle caps. But is chewing on bottle caps bad? and does chewing plastic damage your teeth?

Well, the only way to find that out is to keep reading. So, let’s begin.

1. Lemons

Lemons are acidic fruits. Therefore, putting your teeth in this fruit can cause enamel erosion. In addition, it can disturb your mouth’s pH balance. Thus, your mouth may have difficulty balancing bases and acids.

So, if you love to suck on lemons and enjoy putting them in your mouth for extended durations, you should avoid it.

2. Metal Caps

You may be drawn to open a bottle with your teeth if you can’t find a bottle opener nearby. However, dentists strictly advise against this action.

That’s because applying too much pressure to remove the metallic cap may break your tooth from the middle.

Thus, you can lose a chunk of your tooth. Or perhaps the tooth may even fall off. Consequently, you may require an implant crown or an entire tooth implant to chew food properly.

Therefore, a great alternative to opening a bottle is to wait patiently till you find a bottle opener or ditch your plan of opening the bottle altogether.

3. Plastic Caps

Plastic bottle caps can often be hard to remove. So, people may opt to use their teeth to get the job done. Moreover, many people love to chew plastic caps out of habit. But is it bad to chew on plastic bottle caps?

Of course it is; biting and chewing plastic bottle caps can damage your teeth. That’s because your teeth can suffer from tooth fracture while you open a bottle. Additionally, it can cause pain in your temporomandibular joint.

So, instead of straining your muscles and damaging your teeth, try opening the bottle by applying some hot water.

4. Nails

Biting your nails can flatten your teeth’s edges. As a result, your teeth may become damaged, hypersensitive, and develop enamel cracks. In addition, biting nails can affect your jaw and apply stress to the joints.

Thus, you may experience clenching and grinding teeth as you sleep. If the habit continues, you may have pain in your jaw, teeth, and ears throughout the day.

5. Pens and Paper Clips

People may chew on pens, pencils, and paper clips whenever they are nervous. However, doing so may damage your teeth.

Although you may be tempted to chew on the objects if you’re bored, you should look for a better alternative, such as bubble gum. This way, you can have regular jaw exercise while protecting your teeth.
