The new restrictions don’t rely on the number of community transmissions. On the other hand, CDC recommends three measures for counties to assess their COVID risk:

  • Compare new COVID cases per 100,000 residents from the previous week
  • Percentage of hospital bed occupancy by COVID sufferers
  • New COVID-related admissions in hospitals compared to last week’s data

Counties can now determine whether the COVID risk is high, medium, or low in their communities. Today, the CDC only requires high-risk areas to wear a mask. Moreover, the agency recommends wearing masks in schools in high-risk counties.

1. What Are the Bases of the New CDC Guidelines about Putting on a Mask?

Data showed that positive cases are dropping, and hospitalizations are plummeting. The numbers fell by 44% in the past 14 days, and the country reported about 58,000 COVID patients were in hospitals nationwide.

Experts believe that the new CDC guidelines are timely because of the present condition. Even if the nationwide cases are still high, the U.S. is past the surge. It’s no longer in emergency mode.

2. How did the U.S. States respond to the New CDC Guidelines on COVID?

Several states have already made the necessary changes to the pandemic restrictions. They are now easing the mask-wearing regulations. On the other hand, New Jersey has plans to revoke the mask rules in schools.

Others are planning to get rid of the indoor mask mandates. However, CDC’s official recommendation may sway some districts that have been cautious in the past.

3. However, Americans Must Still Wear Their Mask at Airports and on Planes

The new CDC guidelines may not apply if you’re flying soon because the federal mask mandate covering public transportation is still in effect.

According to the TSA (Transportation Security Administration), they are still assessing the situation together with CDC. However, according to the Association of Flight Attendants-CWA, the organization doesn’t expect changes soon.

Young children don’t have access to the COVID vaccine yet; therefore, mask-wearing is still a priority. Moreover, if you insist on not wearing your mask, you may pay a fine from $500 to $1,000 for first-time offenders.

On the other hand, if you continuously break the rule, you’ll end up with a $1,000 – $3,000 fine. However, passengers with specific disabilities and young children may not wear a mask on the plane.

Wrap up

The new CDC guidelines on wearing a mask allow Americans not to wear it in indoor events and not observe the social distance. In addition, CDC now empowers counties to assess the COVID risk – low, medium, and high.

Only communities with high COVID risk are required to wear masks. However, these new restrictions aren’t applicable when you’re on a plane. Experts don’t expect any easing in mask-wearing rules because kids don’t have access to COVID vaccines yet.
