Eyesight is a precious thing that most of us tend to take for granted. Without our vision, we would not be able to navigate life and perceive the world around us as we do. And for those who have lived without any major eye problems, any form of distorted vision can change a lot.

There are multiple common eye problems that are usually brushed off as nothing too serious. The problem is that these can often indicate underlying conditions or signal significant damage.

To help you understand which symptoms warrant a visit to the eye doctor, we have assembled the following list:

5. Eye Pain

Whenever we experience some form of pain in our body, it usually is a warning sign that something is not well. Eye pain and vision headaches are no exception and it is important to act quickly once you experience them.

Sudden, severe, and lasting eye pain is almost always a symptom of infection or inflammation. These require immediate medical attention, so instead of accessing the issue yourself, seek professional help as there could be other subsequent issues like bleeding or swelling.

4. Blurry Sight

If you feel your vision going blurry, it could be that the eyes are simply not well lubricated. Dry eyes are usually a result of some form of medications, environmental agents, or even leaving your contacts in for too long.

It may also be caused by hormonal changes, which is why pregnant women report episodes of poor vision. But if you happen to be pregnant, let your eye doctor know of any blurry sight issues, as they could indicate high blood pressure and even gestational diabetes.

Those who are not pregnant can buy some over-the-counter eye drops which tend to sort the problem. If that is not enough, making an ophthalmology appointment is a good idea.

It could be that you may only need some prescription glasses, but you could also have some underlying issues of which blurry sight is a symptom.

3. Burning Sensation

A burning sensation in the eyes could simply be due to lack of rest, allergies, or environmental agents like dust or smoke. However, if you suspect that something is in your eye, you should have a professional remove it.

Dry eye and redness accompanied by a burning sensation could also be caused by mites that live on our eyelashes, feeding on dead skin cells and oil buildups.

The best home remedy to unblock oil glands and rid your eyes of excess mites is to hold a rag that has been dampened with hot water against them.

You should also add some form of tea tree oil cleansing product to your facial skin routine. Do this every day for a few weeks and you should no longer experience that burning sensation.

2. Eye Redness

If your eyes are unusually red, drops for dry eyes should be sufficient to fix it just as long as your vision is not altered. Sometimes it is just the result of a small blood vessel erupting, which is no worse than a skin bruise.

However, if you experience sudden blurriness in one eye, burning sensations, and pain, it is good to seek medical eye treatment. Of course, this includes conjunctivitis (otherwise known as ‘pink eye’), which is most commonly caused by viruses or bacteria.

1. Double Vision

Sudden double vision (which is not caused by alcohol or substance consumption) can be telling of a neurological issue, or simply dry eye or cataracts. Double vision in both eyes (which you can test by shutting one at a time) is slightly more worrisome.

If you experience this or blurry double vision, it is crucial to seek medical attention for the right diagnosis and proper double vision treatment.

Eye care should not be dismissed as less important than that of major organs. For common vision problems, contact lenses and prescription glasses may be an easy solution. But you should still visit your eye doctor every couple of years to keep your vision from worsening and check for other issues.
