Forty is a major milestone, be it an anniversary or a birthday. Despite a huge celebration, turning 40 also means that you are aging and are at a greater risk of chronic health conditions, like diabetes, high blood pressure, and auto-immune disorders.

Before you get a number of symptoms of chronic illnesses, it is better to schedule a medic test to monitor your health. Medical testing at regular intervals allows you to keep your vitals and levels in check. It also shows how much you need to control your diet, walk, or eat specific foods.

Here are some tests you need to schedule just as you turn 40 and at regular intervals afterward.

1. Mammogram Screening

Breast cancer is a typical malignancy in women. Unfortunately, mortality rates for this disease haven’t reduced over time.

It is better to have a mammogram screening regularly if you’re a woman over 40. But you can detect a lump in your breast anytime before age 40. The diagnostic mammogram can help the doctor assess whether the lump is cancerous.

A diagnostic mammogram is unnecessary if you haven’t detected any signs of breast lumps. But a screening test is necessary once every eight months to ensure you notice any issues early and start treatment before the cancer spreads.

2. Diabetes Screening

According to the CDC, one in five people is unaware that they have diabetes. As a result of the lack of insulin in their body, they can have nerve and heart damage.

Diabetes screening is necessary after the age of 40 as the pancreas responsible for balancing insulin levels grows weaker with age.

3. Cholesterol Blood Test

A cholesterol blood test is necessary every six months after you turn 40. If you have unbalanced cholesterol levels, make sure that you schedule a cholesterol test every month to see how much you need to exercise and control your diet to maintain the levels.

4. Colon Cancer Screening

If you have someone in your family who has had cancer, you could even begin these screening tests before the age of 40. But if you don’t have a history of colon cancer, 40 is the right age to schedule an examination.

Many people fear these tests because they don’t know what they entail. But when you know how long colonoscopy takes, it might relax you.

It is a 30-45 minute procedure, and you can even take half a day off from work for the test if you schedule it on the weekdays.

Final Words

The medic test that allows you to gauge your health and control your diet is necessary after 40. These tests include colon cancer screening, diabetes, mammograms, and cholesterol tests.

Be sure that these tests are covered by your health insurance, particularly if you’re over the age of 40. This is because getting these tests done regularly could be heavy on the pocket if not covered by insurance.
